## What is rooot?

rooot (rooot.it) is a web-based outdoor route planner covering Europe.
It helps cyclists, hikers, trekkers, trail runners, and walkers plan routes using OpenStreetMap data.
It is positioned as an open alternative to Komoot, AllTrails, Outdooractive, and Strava route-planning workflows, especially for users who want GPX ownership, detailed route analysis, straight-line planning, and multi-day trip planning.
The service is in active beta development.
Core route planning and export remain available without a subscription. Account-bound supporter access currently unlocks multi-day planning and premium live-location group flows.

## Key capabilities

- Route planning for City Bike, Road Bike, Gravel, MTB, Bikepacking, Walking, Jogging, Trail Running, Hiking, and Trekking
- Straight-line planning mode for direct start-to-finish routes without routed paths
- Multi-day planning with staged trip building and day-by-day route organization
- Assist modes: E-Bike, S-Pedelec (speed pedelec up to 45 km/h), Stroller (step-free routing), Exoskeleton (enhanced hill and stair access)
- Interactive elevation profiles with total ascent, descent, highest point, and steepest gradient
- Surface analysis: proportion of asphalt, gravel, dirt, and other surfaces along the route
- Way-type breakdown: footway, path, track, residential, classified roads, etc.
- Weather forecast along the route, including wind overlays on elevation charts (Open-Meteo)
- Point of interest (POI) discovery: water sources, food, shelter, bike repair, viewpoints, parking
- GPX file import and export
- Migration-friendly import/export for users switching from Komoot, Strava, Garmin, and other GPX/FIT-based tools
- Route sharing via link and QR code
- Round-trip route generator (auto-generates tours from a starting point)
- Tour recording with GPS track, stats, and GPX export (Android app)
- Turn-by-turn navigation with off-route detection (Android app)
- Offline map tile support (Android app, in development)

rooot does not claim to replicate every proprietary feature from those platforms, but it does aim to cover the core route-planning, analysis, export, and navigation workflows in an open, migration-friendly way.

## Open source commitment

rooot is built on open source software. The project commits 20% of revenue to financially support the open source initiatives it depends on, including OpenStreetMap, BRouter, Valhalla, OpenLayers, Django, Flutter, PostgreSQL, Chart.js, htmx, Nominatim, Overpass API, and Open-Meteo.
