Privacy Policy

rooot is built privacy-first. You can plan routes without an account. We don't sell your data, we don't run third-party ad or tracking networks, and we keep what we collect to the minimum needed to run the service.

We process personal data in accordance with the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (revised FADP / revDSG). Where we offer the service to users in the European Union, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) may also apply.

What we collect

  • Account details — if you create an account, we store your email address and a securely hashed password. An account is optional and only required to save routes and content.
  • Routes & content you create — saved routes, waypoints, route analytics, notes, photos you attach to points of interest, and custom POIs. These are tied to your account.
  • Usage analytics — we run our own first-party analytics, on our own infrastructure, to understand how the planner is used. This records events such as page views and scroll depth, along with technical details like the page path, viewport size and browser language. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising trackers.
  • Technical & device info — standard server logs (e.g. IP address, request time, user agent) plus basic device information from the mobile app (such as device model, operating-system version and app version). Generated automatically and used for security, debugging, compatibility and abuse prevention.
  • Payment data — if you make a voluntary supporter contribution, payment is processed by Stripe. We never see or store your full card details; we only record that a contribution was made and its status.

Location & app permissions (mobile app)

With your permission, the rooot mobile app accesses the following device data. Each is used only for the feature described below, is never sold, and is never shared with advertising networks or data brokers.

  • Location (precise and approximate) — used to show your position on the map, center the planner, provide turn-by-turn navigation, and record the GPS track of rides you choose to record. Location is processed on your device; routes and tracks you save or sync are stored with your account.
  • Location while the screen is off — when you start navigation, tour recording or live group sharing, the app runs a foreground service (shown by a persistent notification) so it can keep guiding you, record a complete track, or share your position while the app is in the background or the screen is off. This uses your “while using the app” location permission, happens only during an active session, and stops as soon as you end it.
  • Sharing your location with a group — if you turn on live location sharing for a group ride, your current location is sent to rooot and shared in real time with the other members of that group so you can see each other on the map. This happens only while you have sharing switched on for that group; you can turn it off at any time. It is never shared with anyone outside the group you chose, and never used for advertising.
  • Camera and photos — accessed only when you choose to attach a photo to a point of interest or scan a code to join a group. The app does not use your camera in the background.
  • Motion and position sensors — during rides you actively record, the app may sample the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass to estimate road roughness, surface quality and heading. These readings are associated with the recorded track and used to improve routing; they are not used to identify you.
  • Notifications — with your permission, the app sends notifications for navigation guidance, tour-recording status, and group activity. You can turn these off in your device settings.
  • Files you choose — when you import a route file (GPX, FIT or KML) or attach a photo, the app reads only the file you select. It does not otherwise scan your device storage.

You control these permissions in your device settings and can revoke them at any time; the related features will simply stop working. Location and sensor data are used to deliver app functionality and are not sold or shared with third parties for advertising.

How we use it

  • To provide core functionality — planning, routing, saving and managing your routes and content.
  • In the mobile app, to show your location on the map, provide turn-by-turn navigation, and record ride tracks — with your permission.
  • To operate, secure, debug and improve the service.
  • To process and recognise voluntary supporter contributions.
  • To communicate with you about your account or important service changes when necessary.

We do not sell or rent your personal data, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.

Third parties & map data

Map and routing functionality relies on OpenStreetMap data, BRouter routing, and map rendering via MapLibre. Map tiles and similar assets are served from rooot-hosted infrastructure. Payments are handled by Stripe under their own privacy policy.

Your choices & rights

  • You can plan routes anonymously, without registering.
  • You can view, edit and delete your saved routes and content from within the app.
  • Under the revised FADP (and, where applicable, the GDPR) you have the right to access, correct, and request deletion of your personal data, and to object to certain processing. You can exercise these rights by contacting us at [email protected].
  • If you believe we have handled your data unlawfully, you may lodge a complaint with the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC), or with your local supervisory authority in the EU.

Terms of Use

By using the rooot planner hosted at rooot.it, you agree to these terms. rooot is currently offered as a free beta, and features may change or be interrupted as it develops.

Accounts

An account is optional and only needed to save routes and content. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for activity under your account. Please give accurate information when registering and keep it up to date.

Your content

You keep ownership of the routes, notes, photos and POIs you create. By uploading content, you grant rooot the limited permission needed to store, process and display it back to you so the service can function. Don't upload content you don't have the right to share. Note that some contributions (such as POI edits) may feed back into open mapping data and be shared accordingly.

Acceptable use

  • Don't use rooot for unlawful purposes or to infringe others' rights.
  • Don't attempt to disrupt, overload, scrape abusively, or compromise the service or its infrastructure.
  • Don't upload malicious, illegal, or knowingly inaccurate content.

Routing & safety

Routes, elevation, surface and weather information are generated from open data and automated routing, and may be inaccurate, incomplete, or out of date. You are responsible for your own safety. Always use your own judgement, check current conditions, carry appropriate equipment, and respect access rules and local regulations. rooot is a planning aid, not a guarantee that any route is safe, legal or passable.

Supporter contributions

rooot's core planning is free. You may optionally make a voluntary supporter contribution to help cover development and routing costs. Contributions are processed by Stripe and, unless required by law, are non-refundable. Supporter status grants the access described at the time of contribution and does not create any other entitlement.

No warranty & liability

The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. To the maximum extent permitted by law, rooot and its maintainers are not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential damages, or for any loss arising from your use of — or inability to use — the service, including reliance on routing or other information it provides.

We may update these terms or this privacy policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the “last updated” date above, and continued use after changes means you accept the updated terms.
